Right: By uploading "Traces of occupation" to the biggest Chinese Online Shopping website (www.taobao.com), artist lets the website to find similar pictures online, by using "Image Searching" function, which is originally designed for convenient online shopping here.

"Traces of occupation" is a photo series indicating the existence of past, broken frames, hole left by a nail, peeling graffiti on an old wall...they are evidence of something once existed, while they are now valueless, and usually lacking belongingness. However, goods in online market are defined by specific prices, and can be possibly purchased by anyone, in order words, everyone can become the owner. In this work, traces in public space are recognized by AI as priced merchandise online, connecting the reality and network society in a contradictory way.

Early 2020, a new type of pneumonia blocked the world, limiting people’s basic rights and bringing the darkness of confusion to life. This work began by linking the anxiety I had in the tunnel with the anxiety I have right now.

The outside space is completely shielded inside a tunnel, brining up a solitude situation as well as the desire for the outside world. In other words, condition of “trapping inside a room” is connected with the action of “passing through a tunnel”, because both are detached from outside.

The name of the work comes from the road sign "Turn light on in tunnel”, which usually installed at tunnel entrance. The action of (turn light on or not) itself is like a boundary line ( surroundings become dark or not), which can be further interpreted as a boundary line for the flow of time. In other words, we don't “turn light on” unless something unusual happens. However, depending on the way of thinking, our daily life itself can be in a state of “lightened”, while already been inside a larger tunnel.

CAPTION

Extracted from

Albert Camus

"The Plague"

I was in the dark

I tried to see clearly in the dark

For a long time

I can’t feel the difference now

If one of us occasionally tries to talk a few words to the other

Or show some emotions

then no matter what the other party answers

the result will stab the person in the heart

He will find that there is no common language between them

One really talks about his thoughts and pains for a few days.

What he wants to express is the image of long-term waiting and passion

while the other thinks that he is only complaining

about some ordinary sadness

Regardless of whether the answer is good or bad intentions

It is always contrary to the wishes of the speaker

so it is better to be silent

One can't bear the silence of being reticent

but they can't keep up with others neither

so they have to repeat others’ words

about old-fashioned conversations

about general human relations

social dynamics

nothing more than daily news

It has become commonplace to express the most real pain

through vulgar formulas

Not living there

but drifting up and down uncontrollably

abandoned in unorientated days and fruitless memories

like a group of wandering ghosts
